Choosing the Type of Vehicle to Transport Heavy Loads for Your Company

Heavy haulage transport is something many industrial companies find themselves needing at one point or another, which can prove to be quite an expensive problem for companies that need to transport a lot of heavy equipment often. If your company has this problem, where you have to move a lot of heavy things any distance, you might have already looked into the possibility of buying your own transporting equipment. This might be a good idea if the economical aspects outweigh those of hiring transportation companies for every move and if you have a driver that is capable of maneuvering carrier trucks for heavy equipment. Before buying machinery like this, you should evaluate carefully what type of machine you should get to meet your needs.

Tow trucks

If you only need to haul heavy items a short distance every time you transport something, you don't need complex, expensive machinery that transportation companies use. A towing truck of a wheel lifting model designed for heavy haulage might be enough if it's heavy machinery that you need to transport. Many construction companies have vehicles they can't transport on the roads between a work site and the garage, which makes the use of a towing truck the easiest option. However, as these types of vehicles can damage your machines by pulling them, it's not advised to use for longer distances.

Flatbed trailers

The most common trailer for many types of heavy haulage is a flatbed trailer. It lifts the item or the machinery off the ground, which makes it easy to load and unload. However, if they're not trailers specially designed for carrying heavy equipment, then they will prove rather useless. Flatbed trailers designed for heavy equipment can be rather expensive and are best designed for heavy machinery, rather than heavy items. However, when the machine is placed safely on the trailer, it can go on for long distances without damaging the machine on the back of it.

Articulated lorry

If the equipment you're transporting is bulky rather than heavy, you need other options for transporting it. If your equipment has a rigid length or width, you might need an articulated lorry with many parts fastened together to make it long enough to be able to transport items of abnormally large dimensions. These types of vehicles are rather expensive but might be the only option if you transport things like wind turbines or aircraft. Also remember that you may still have to pay for pilot and escorting vehicle services when transporting things like these, depending on your state heavy vehicle regulator, even if you own the main transporting vehicle yourself.
